Google Just Made Reddit an Expert. We've Been Measuring It All Along.

Google AI Mode now labels Reddit threads and forum discussions as "Expert Advice" inside its AI responses. For brands measuring AI visibility, this is not a new signal. It is a public confirmation of one we have been tracking from day one.

Google Just Made Reddit an Expert. We've Been Measuring It All Along.

On May 6, 2026, Google announced that AI Mode and AI Overviews will now incorporate a "preview of perspectives" sourced from public online discussions, with content from Reddit and forums labeled as "Expert Advice" or "Community Perspectives". For brands measuring AI visibility, this is not a new signal entering the equation. It is a public confirmation of one we have been tracking from day one.

What Google actually changed

The change is not subtle. Google AI Mode, the conversational layer that increasingly shapes how users discover brands and products, will now surface community discussions inside its AI-generated responses. The threads will carry the creator's name, handle, or community name. They will sit alongside the synthesized answer, framed by Google itself as authoritative input.

The framing matters. Google did not write "according to Reddit users". It wrote "Expert Advice". That is an algorithmic decision about who counts as an expert when the AI generates an answer. The implication is direct: a thread on a niche subreddit, a comment in a vertical forum, a discussion in a community Google has indexed — these inputs are now structurally weighted in the AI response that decides whether your brand appears in front of a buyer.

Why this is not news to us

The Citation Rate framework was built on a premise that today's announcement makes obvious: AI visibility is a portfolio measurement, not a single-source one. The 56 parameters that compose the Citability Score were never limited to your website, your structured data, or your published content. They include community signal — what is being said about your brand, where, by whom, and with what weight.

This is not a parameter we added in response to Google's announcement. It is one of the foundations of how the Citability Score is calculated. While other tools in the AI visibility space focus narrowly on whether your brand appears in a ChatGPT or Perplexity response, Citation Rate has measured the full input landscape that produces those responses — including the community layer that Google has now publicly validated.

Google did not add a new signal. It made a signal we have been tracking visible to everyone else.

What we already measure

The community signal inside the Citability Score is not a single number. It is a system of dimensions, each tracked across the platforms that AI engines actually pull from. Without revealing the internals, the dimensions we measure include:

Mention frequency. How often your brand surfaces in industry-relevant community threads, normalized by category volume. A brand that appears in two threads per month inside a vertical with two hundred thread-per-month volume is structurally invisible. The same two mentions inside a niche with twenty threads per month is dominant.

Thread-level sentiment. Whether the discussion around your brand is positive, neutral, or negative — and crucially, whether the sentiment is consistent or fragmented across communities. A brand loved on one subreddit and dismissed on another produces a fragmentation signal that AI engines pick up and reflect in their answers.

Source authority. Not all communities carry equal weight. A senior r/sysadmin thread is not the same input as a casual general-interest forum. We track the relative authority of the communities where your brand appears, weighted by indicators that correlate with how AI engines themselves rank source credibility.

Temporal recurrence. One viral thread is volatile. Sustained presence across months is structural. We measure the consistency of mention across time windows, because AI engines increasingly favor sources with stable presence over one-off spikes.

These four dimensions feed into the Citability Score on the community-signal axis. They have been there since the framework was built. Google's announcement does not change what we measure — it changes how publicly relevant the measurement has become.

What this means for brands monitoring their AVI

Two practical consequences follow from Google's move, and both are visible inside the Citation Rate dashboard already.

First, brands that have seen their AI Visibility Index rise without a clear cause may now have part of the explanation. A positive thread on a high-authority forum, indexed by Google and now potentially surfaced as "Expert Advice", can lift the AVI on queries where that community is treated as a relevant source. The signal was always there. The Citability Score on the community axis was already capturing it. What changes is that the connection between community presence and AI visibility is now an explicit Google product feature, not just an algorithmic correlation.

Second, brands with weak or absent community presence will find themselves at a structural disadvantage that compounds. If your brand has zero footprint on the forums and subreddits relevant to your category, an "Expert Advice" section in a Google AI Mode response is not a section where you can appear. Your competitors can. The gap that the Citability Score has been flagging on the community axis is now a gap with a name and a Google label attached to it.

The bigger pattern

This is not the first time the AI visibility space has watched a major platform validate a signal that mature measurement frameworks were already tracking. When Snapchat partnered with Perplexity, when TikTok rolled out Tako and AI Overviews, when Gemini opened the Shopping Graph to direct purchase — each of these announcements was framed as a structural shift. For brands that had been treating AI visibility as a single-engine problem, each one was a surprise. For frameworks that treated AI visibility as a portfolio measurement from the start, each was a confirmation.

Google adding "Expert Advice" from Reddit is the same pattern at a different scale. The platforms keep widening the definition of what feeds into AI responses. The frameworks that scale are the ones that already accounted for it.

What you can check this week

If you run an AI visibility program, the next dashboard review is a good moment to look at the community-signal axis of your Citability Score with fresh eyes. The questions worth asking are concrete: where does your brand currently appear in the forums and communities relevant to your category; what is the sentiment shape of those mentions; which competitors are present where you are absent; how has the trend moved over the last ninety days.

The answers were measurable last month. They are measurable today. The difference is that today, they are also visibly Google-validated. The signal did not change. The stakes did.
